Growth led by Nokia
The city rose from sixth place a year earlier after a reported 67% increase in applications. Espoo accounted for 73% of Finland’s European patent applications.
Nokia was the main contributor, filing more than 2,200 applications and ranking fifth among all EPO applicants. KONE and Metso were also among Finland’s five largest applicants.
A measure of industrial research activity
The ranking highlights the concentration of research-intensive companies in Espoo. It measures applications filed with the EPO, rather than patents granted or startup formation, and its scale is strongly shaped by Nokia’s research activity.
