The investment amount was not disclosed. Aavuus plans to use the funding to build its first minimum viable product, demonstrate performance and begin working with early customers.
The company originated from the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute, drawing on expertise in satellite laser ranging and space geodesy.
Closing a tracking gap
Small debris presents a difficult problem for satellite operators. Objects can be large enough to damage a spacecraft while remaining difficult to track routinely with existing systems.
Aavuus is developing a network of ground-based laser stations intended to improve tracking precision and detection. The network is a development ambition, rather than a system already deployed at global scale.
The team includes CEO Joonas Jokela, Chief Scientific Officer Jouni Peltoniemi and Chief Commercial Officer Brian Dunne.
The next milestone is technical and commercial validation: demonstrating what the system can detect, how reliably it can track those objects and how customers can use the resulting data.
Aavuus adds another application of Finnish research to the space industry, focusing on the ground-based infrastructure needed to keep missions operating safely.
